Cuisine

The most accessible aspect of the local culture for you will be their food. All food is prepared over a traditional wood fire from organically grown ingredients.

The staple diet here consists of grains such as Rice, Bajra, Jowar, and Naachni, a red millet very rich in iron and other vitamins, is used to make papads and rotis. Varai, a white millet, is also used to make rotis.

Popular local dishes: include Waal ka Varun, Deshi chicken, Gevada (made with groundnuts), Danda (made from a local variety of pumpkin), and Vade (a spicy gravy made using dried channa flour) all served with home-made pickles.

Festivals

The festivals are quintessentially Maharashtrian. There is a small temple of God Waghoba as soon as we enter the village. The tribal people worship Waghoba-The Tiger God, so that he would not attack them or their children and animals.

There is a temple of Goddess Muktai in the village which is believed as a divinity of the village. Every year there is a fair of Goddess Muktai on the day of Ramnavami in the Hindu Month of Chaitra. On this day even the villagers who have migrated to the cities come back to the village for the fair.

The Annual Rajur Animal Fair

There is an animal fair and exhibition held in Rajur every year, attended by people from every corner of the nearby regions. People bring their animals to Rajur in order to take part in the exhibition and also contest for winning the prizes for the best bullocks. On the day of the fair the best quality animals of the Khillar Breed of bullocks observed in Maharashtra can be seen in exhibition. Different kinds of locally made attractive ornaments for the bullocks can be seen in the market on this day.

This fair is one of the most important events in the area; with farmers hiring trucks / tempos to carry their animals, their feed etc to the fair site from their village. Children bunk school to attend this event of 3 to 4 days.
